Two Generations of Moms Turn to Children’s Council for Support

From L: Monique, her mom and her brother.

Monique Woodford Breaux’s memories of Children’s Council go back to her childhood. Her mother turned to us for child development workshops and support when Monique was a young child.

Monique says, “My mom originally told me about Children’s Council, and when she did, I remembered being there as a young child.”

Now a married mother of four, ages 3 – 10, Monique has followed in her mother’s footsteps as a regular attendee at our Parent/Caregiver workshops for over ten years. She says, “I originally came to Children’s Council when I was expecting my oldest. I needed help understanding what I was going through in the prenatal process.”

Even after they moved to the East Bay, Monique, her husband and children commuted across the bay to attend our workshops.

She says, “The programs are so interesting and the information is just invaluable. We love Parent Café, and the Play Lab workshops that focus on health, safety and child development.”

She even attends our programs for child care educators, saying, “I’m not a [professional educator] but I am a full-time mother, and I want to be the best teacher that I can for my children.”

Since our programs moved to a virtual format during COVID, Monique and her kids have attended even more workshops. She says, “We’ve been more active in virtual playgroups each Tuesday. My children love it, especially the sign language for kids. And of course the workshops are free, which is great during these times. ”

Most recently, Monique and her family participated in our Virtual Play Lab workshop focusing on Stress Management & Self-Care

Monique’s kids enjoy Wellness Kit activities

As part of the program, all 40 participants received “Wellness Kits” filled with items for self-care for children and the adults who take care of them, including essential oils for aromatherapy, herbal tea, coloring pages, plant kits, art supplies and sensory play items for stress management.

Monique says, “The wellness kits were so thoughtful. They had resources and activities for the entire family. We shared with family by delivery and by video chats.  I’m grateful to be in the next generation of learning and investing into my own children and community

Monique says Children’s Council has been a steady support during the stress of the pandemic: “It’s so nice to have a consistent activity. Every week we can login and see such nice, caring, familiar faces. With so many things shut down, it’s so good to have a reliable, quality activity to enjoy together.”

For over 45 years, Children’s Council has supported thousands of families like Monique’s. But we need your help to keep our programs strong.
