Norman Yee

2021 Patty Siegel Child Care Champion

In celebration of his many years of service as an educator, advocate and elected official committed to early care and education, Children’s Council honors Norman Yee as our 2021 Patty Siegel Child Care Champion.

Join us as we honor Norman at our Child Care Champions Showcase + Auction on May 20.

A San Francisco native born in Chinatown during the 40’s, Norman would grow into his legacy of pioneering education and child services for his city. He has served as a teacher, executive director of Wu Yee Children’s Services (which derives a part of its name from Norman himself), a member of the San Francisco Board of Education, as well as a member and president of the SF Board of Supervisors.

Throughout his life and career, Norman has been committed to bettering conditions for youth. As a child in a Chinese family and a student in San Francisco public schools, Norman saw firsthand how children in minority communities could be underserved and has made it his mission to address these gaps.

During his 18-year tenure as executive director of Wu Yee Children’s Services, Norman and his team worked in close partnership with Children’s Council on behalf of the children, families and early educators in our community.

Norman began his political career in 2004 by serving as a commissioner for the San Francisco Board of Education and was re-elected in 2008. During his second term, he served as president. In 2012, Norman was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and in 2019 rose to the position of board president.

Among his countless achievements as a city leader, Norman authored and successfully advocated for Prop C, a proposition that will raise more than $125 million annually for child care and early education in San Francisco.

Norman holds a bachelor’s in civil engineering from University of California, Berkeley and a master’s in education from San Francisco State University.

Though now retired, Norman remains an active advocate for early care and education.
