Margie Stokes

2018 Family Child Care Provider Champion

For more than three decades, Margie Stokes has given her heart and soul to support some of the most vulnerable children in our city with the highest quality child care.

Prior to becoming a child care provider, Margie Stokes served as a licensed vocational nurse for 25 years. After her retirement in 1984, Margie identified the critical need for child care providers in her community, and saw an opportunity to utilize her passion for child development, her minor in college. She opened Marge’s Child Care in her home in San Francisco’s Ingleside neighborhood the same year, serving six children.

In 1987 she received a grant from the city’s Mayor’s Office of Community Development to expand her business, hire additional staff and raise her capacity to care for up to 12 children. To this day, the majority of children in Margie’s program come from low-income families.

For over two decades, she has been active in virtually every Children’s Council provider support program, attending countless workshops and serving as a mentor for new child care providers. Margie is a tireless child care advocate, speaking at the local and state level on numerous occasions. In the late 80s, she was nominated by Mayor Art Agnos to represent San Francisco child care providers in Washington, D.C.
