Learn to use a computer on a refurbished device that will be yours to keep. Attend 2 of 3 sessions to get a free refurbished laptop.

Learn to use a computer on a refurbished device that will be yours to keep. This series of classes will cover navigating the computer interface, connecting to wifi, basics of the internet and email, creating and saving files, uploading files, and using San Francisco Public Library online.

Attendees who attend at least two out of the three class sessions will receive a refurbished laptop to take home. Laptops will be used for practice in each class, and will be distributed for take home at the second session. Laptops are given as-is.

There are three classes on Wed, Aug 17, 24, and 31. You must attend at least two out of three classes to receive a refurbished laptop.

FAQ

What kind of laptop is it and what software does it have?

Friends of San Francisco Public Library received a wide variety of donated devices that were refurbished with the latest version of Xubuntu (Linux based). The laptops come with Libre Office, which can be used to create files and export them in all the standard document formats.

Do the laptops come with Internet?

The devices can connect to wifi, but do not come with a network. Users will need to have wifi at home, or access wifi at San Francisco Public Library (or other locations), when they wish to get online with their device.

What if users need support on their laptop?

If they need assistance using the device, they are welcome to call the Bridge at Main at (415) 557-4388. Attendees in the class will also receive a handout of other places to call for support. The devices will receive Xubuntu security updates until 2025. Devices are used computers and we cannot guarantee their long term functionality. There is no warranty.

What if someone can’t attend all sessions?

They should attend two out of three sessions. The attendee can take their laptop home at the end of the second session they attend, whether it is the second or third class date. Please encourage people to attend all class sessions so they are best prepared to succeed with their device.

What if someone already has a computer but wants to take a class?

Because the Tech It Forward classes will be focusing in large part on one specific computer interface, they may not be the best fit for someone who is learning to use another kind of computer. Several other options are available for technology learning, including classes at San Francisco Public Library (https://on.sfpl.org/techtime) and self-paced online learning through Northstar Digital Literacy. The Bridge at Main is happy to discuss more options: (415) 557 4388.
