Years at Children’s Council:

1 year

Background:

Alan Wong serves as the Senior Director of Public Policy Communication at Children’s Council of San Francisco. He also serves as an elected member of City College of San Francisco Board of Trustees and served as Board President from 2023 to 2025. In addition, he also currently serves his country as a First Lieutenant in the Army National Guard.

Previously as a union organizer, he championed initiatives to raise California’s minimum wage and protect jobs from outsourcing. As a fifteen-year veteran and lieutenant in the National Guard, he has been deployed multiple times to provide disaster relief and security during California wildfires. In 2019, as an education policy advisor at City Hall, Alan drafted legislation that provides a decade of ‘Free City College’ for all San Franciscans. He also coordinated a partnership between City College, the SFUSD and local organizations to expand City College classes for high school students, increasing their academic success and opportunities. With a comprehensive policy background in child care, K-12, and higher education, Alan aims to support the success of young San Franciscans from birth to adulthood.

What is your proudest moment at Children’s Council?

In my first year at Children’s Council, my proudest achievement was working with the SF Early Care and Education (ECE) Advocacy Coalition and Supervisor Myrna Melgar’s office to protect critical funding for child care. We successfully fought off an attempt to divert “Baby” Proposition C funds, preserving over $32 million in child care funding for the next four fiscal years. This victory was the result of months of educating elected officials and organizing a diverse coalition of community stakeholders.

What inspires your work each day?

I’m constantly inspired by the parents and children at Parent Voices SF. These parents and children push themselves outside their comfort zones every day to advocate for our entire community, and their dedication drives me to do the same.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Children’s Council?

What I love most about working at Children’s Council is our mission. It’s an honor to be part of an organization that is dedicated to supporting the success of San Francisco’s youngest residents.

What is the greatest challenge in your position?

Budget is always my greatest challenge. Child care is consistently at risk, and I’m committed to working with the community to defend and expand access to quality care.

What would you do with a large donation?

With a large donation, I’d invest in adding a community organizer to our Advocacy team. This role would help us better mobilize the grassroots of the child care community—including early educators, parents, and youth—so we can expand our work and address a broader range of issues than we currently have the capacity for.
