2022 Family Child Care Provider Champion
Please join Children’s Council in congratulating Leticia Ornelas as our 2022 Family Child Care Provider Champion!
Having been born and raised in Mexico City, Leticia has lived with her family in San Francisco’s Bayview for 25 years. She and her husband, Esteban Gutierrez, are the parents of four children, ages 29, 27, 22 and 11 years old.
A lifelong child caregiver for family and friends, Leticia’s journey to becoming a licensed early educator began when she volunteered in her own children’s Head Start classes in 1999. With the support of Children’s Council, she opened her Family Child Care program, Manos de Angel Daycare, in her Bayview home in 2012. Her husband and older children play a key role in supporting a diverse community of children, including those with special needs.
Beyond her child care program, Leticia and her husband have cared for more than 20 children in the foster care system.
When the COVID-19 vaccines were first released in 2021, Leticia appealed to the City’s Board of Supervisors to prioritize child care providers in her community to be among the first groups in San Francisco to access the vaccine. Additionally, during the pandemic, she prepared hundreds of healthy meals for families in crisis through a unique partnership with Children’s Council’s food program.
Leticia takes pride in participating in trainings and professional growth opportunities that promote quality services for the children and families she serves. She is currently in the Dual Language Learners Cohort, a statewide initiative that implements Personalized Oral Language Learning (POLL) strategies to more effectively engage learning among young children.
She is an active community leader, regularly attending meetings of San Francisco’s Office of Early Care & Education (OECE), First5 and Childcare Providers United. She supports her fellow child care providers with information about workshops and trainings, as well as critical resources related to COVID via regular meetings with the San Francisco Department of Public Health in collaboration with OECE/First5.
Leticia has deep empathy and a great love for her community that is inspirational to other Family Child Care educators who aspire to create change while being leaders in the early education field.
