Children’s Council Appoints Gina M. Fromer As New CEO

Fromer Brings a Wealth of Community and Advocacy Experience to Role

The Board of Directors of Children’s Council of San Francisco is pleased to announce the appointment of Gina M. Fromer as its new Chief Executive Officer.

Fromer, a sixth-generation San Franciscan, has devoted her career to the needs of families in San Francisco and communities across California.

She has more than three decades of leadership experience in youth & family services and education programs, including in some of SF’s most underserved neighborhoods.

Fromer began her career at Head Start, then rose through the ranks of the San Francisco YMCA to become District Vice President, overseeing three YMCA branches serving 15,000 families. She played a key role in raising over 8.5 million dollars for the Bayview YMCA capital campaign.

Raised in San Francisco’s Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood, Gina began community service in her teens as a counselor for Young Community Developers, which provides support and training for young adults. As a young mom, struggling to go to school and get a better job, she turned to Children’s Council for help and was able to find child care.

“This job brings me full circle, back to a place that has had such a profound impact on my life and career,” says Fromer.

“Ensuring that children and their families have the childcare resources they need to thrive is good for families, good for business, and hugely beneficial to our great city. I look forward to joining this amazing team and working with our partners to ensure that every child has a quality childcare experience – something I have always considered a basic human right.”

Most recently, Fromer was CEO of the San Francisco Education Fund, where she directed community volunteer programs, educator grants, and student scholarships designed to help public school students succeed.

Prior to that, Gina served as the California State Director at The Trust for Public Land, where she created new parks in park-poor neighborhoods in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and protected landscapes across the state.

Gina’s connections to the local community, her past advocacy work on behalf of families and children, and her experience leading organizations made her the Board’s top choice. She succeeds Sandee Blechman, who is retiring as Executive Director after eight years.

During her tenure, Blechman significantly raised Children’s Council’s profile through her work with state and local government, as well as through private fundraising efforts. She has been a true champion of early childhood education.

Fromer’s appointment is effective April 29, 2019. In her role, Fromer will continue to advance the key initiatives of Children’s Council, with an emphasis on furthering the organization’s mission to ensure that all families in San Francisco have access to quality, affordable child care.

We hope you will join us at our annual Child Care Champions Luncheon on May 10, for an opportunity to meet Gina and bid Sandee Blechman, our 2019 Patty Siegel Community Champion honoree, well wishes on her retirement.
