What to Look for in an After School Program

students with books and computersThe new school year begins soon – what will your children do once the school day has ended? After school programs provide great opportunities for young children and teens to learn new skills, complete homework in a supervised setting, have fun, and stay active. Here are some tips to help you choose the best after school program for your family.

Make Sure it’s a Good Fit

Consider your budget and how it compares to the cost of the program. Ask if there will be extra costs for meals or field trips. What is your family’s schedule? Do you need care for a few days, the whole week, or full time? What about holidays? Learn about the afterschool program’s philosophy and level of parental involvement.

Consider the Staffing

Are staff members properly trained on health, safety, behavior management and child development? Observe the way staff maintain order, especially during transitions between activities. They should treat children with respect, listen to what they have to say, and make them feel welcome and comfortable. Make sure that staff provides opportunities for children to think for themselves, praise students when they cooperate or join in on activities, and communicate expectations and limitations.

Look for a Positive Environment

The ideal after school environment includes both indoor and outdoor facilities, comfortable furniture, and open space. Children should have a separate, quiet area for homework or tutoring, as well as plenty of space to play. Meals and snacks are important too; children should receive plenty of nutritious food. Make sure play equipment is safe and that the facility is clean, well ventilated, and brightly lit.

Evaluate the Program Structure

To allow for adequate supervision, staff to child ratio should be between 1:20 and 1:12, although younger children may require a smaller ratio. A high-quality program will provide a variety of activities that are both stimulating and suited to children’s interests and ages. There should also be a balance of homework time and child-initiated activities. Finally, look for an environment where children’s self-worth is valued; a place where they can develop personal and interpersonal social abilities, a respect for cultural diversity, and self-care skills.

Thanks for the information on what to look for in an after school program for my nephew. I’ll be sure to look for a staff to child ratio of at least 1:20, like you mentioned. Do you have any other tips for me?

These are some great things to look for in an after school program. I’ve been trying to find one for my son so he has something to do. I really agree with what you said about the staffing. You want to make sure that they’re well trained and will provide a fun and safe environment.
