Let’s Pretend!

When children dress as a princess or a superhero, or turn a bunch of pillows into a fortress, they are engaging in pretend play. This is an important part of learning for young children. Pretend play allows them to explore their feelings about new situations and learn how other people react to different situations.

The best part is that you don’t need special items or lots of space for pretend play. Parents can encourage pretend play in their young children by providing them with safe, household items like old clothing and recycled cardboard to prompt their imaginations—and by joining in the fun, too!
